My Very First 10K!

Phew! I survived this weekend! To start off, I'm a night person. I even work nights, and I like it because it's much easier for me than waking up in the morning. That's probably one of the reason's it was so difficult to drag myself out of bed at 5 AM on Saturday morning after only 3 hours worth of sleep! You may be asking, why on earth would a night person get up that early? Especially on the weekend! Well, I made the wonderful/horrible decision to sign myself up for the Utah Valley 10K this year (for those of you who aren't runners, that's 6.2 miles) so I dragged myself out of bed before the sun and quickly got ready. My co-worker Mariah was also running in the race and offered to pick me up so that Bob could take the car to work. I agreed, and by 5:30, we were driving to our race. We were told to park in the Provo Mall parking lot and take a bus the rest of the way to the starting line. The last bus left at 6:15, so we had to be there early even though the race didn't start until 7 AM. It gave me plenty of time to stretch/psych myself out though! Finally the race started, and I took off like a lightening bolt, luckily within half a mile I was running down hill. By the time I reached mile 1, I was really flying. I tried to keep that pace, but I was going way too fast! By the time I reached mile 2, I had to stop and walk a little. Luckily they were handing out water so I took a drink and walked the side ache I had out before taking off again.... but at too fast of a pace. The entire race it was a battle between my brain and my body. My brain wanted to get to the finish line ASAP, and would convince me that I could maintain the fast pace, and my body would soon remind me that I hadn't trained to run that fast, so I would slow down and eventually walk a little. There were so many thoughts racing through my head while I ran too. Why did I do this? I can do this! Ugh, I'm never going to make it to the finish line! etc... Finally I saw the finish line up ahead and I knew I was going to make it so I kicked it into high gear and ran as fast as I possibly could the rest of the way! I made it across the finish line at 1 hour 7 minutes and 7 seconds. I came in 17th out of 27 for the girls 19-24 years old. Not bad for my first race ever! My parents watched me cross the finish line, and after congratulating me and helping me find my stuff, they took me to Village Inn for breakfast. I wolfed down the most delicious blueberry pancakes I thought I had ever tasted and then went back to my parents house with them just to pass out on their couch and nap for several hours.

After I finished my race, I kissed my medal
instead of the ground. I wasn't sure
I would be able to get back up if I knelt down..

Proof I finished!

I woke up to go to lunch with Chelsea, but she unfortunately had to cancel at the last minute so I went with Rachel and Kelsey instead. After a delicious lunch at Zupas and some wishful animal shopping at the Petsmart across the parking lot, Kelsey and I partook in our favorite hobby, browsing model homes and open houses. I managed to find my dream home... only twice any kind of budget Bob and I could afford, but I noticed that the more expensive homes we looked at weren't even close to what I wanted. I'm not ready to start house shopping yet, but our poor future real estate agent is going to have his/her hands full, cause I'm too picky to settle for something I don't like...

Unfortunately, Kelsey had to work, so she dropped me back home at my parents house, and I went back to napping. I had a very exhausting morning! I couldn't nap too long this time though. Bob got off work at 5:30, and he came over with Thor and Captain America for our Bell Marvel Movie Marathon, Day #2. I really thought my mom would like Captain America best since it's got more of the romance, and Captain America is a little bit of a goody two shoes. She proved me wrong though, saying it was too cheesy and she liked the genius, billionaire, playboy philanthropist, Iron man better. Who knew?

Sunday, I slept in and spent most of the day relaxing before going to a family BBQ at my Aunt Shauna and Uncle Garry's house. I hadn't seen that side of my family in quite a while so it was really nice to just relax and catch up for a couple hours while soaking up the sun and eating good food!
